2/11: Resisting Repression- Black Panthers and animal defenders unite to counter attacks |

 Last Saturday, February 11, a coalition of Boston organizations including the Boston chapter of the Jericho movement, the Boston Animal Defense League and Boston Anarchist Black Cross held a community meeting with guests from around the country. The panel of Black Panther veterans, animal liberation activists and Puerto Rican independentistas spoke about the recent attacks by government and private interests against what they perceive to be a threat from an increasingly cohesive movement for social justice and true democracy. |

When Freedom of Expression Becomes a Weapon |

 Most of us are now well aware of the caricatures of the prophet Mohammad, solicited by and published last September in the right-wing Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten. This week several publications resurrected those controversial images of Mohammad as a bomb-turbaned terrorist and another where he refuses suicide bombers entry into Heaven as “We’ve run out of Virgins.” Then our news sources informed us that due solely to these images “outrage sweeps across the Muslim world.” Such coverage has elicited miles of text and a Babel of blather denouncing those who would dare threaten OUR freedom of speech because it offends THEIR “backward” beliefs. |

At a Snail’s Pace: Building a Different Kind of Politics |

 On January 24, the Snail’s Pace Collective visited Boston as part of their East Coast US tour, which includes at least fifteen cities in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee; to facilitate a workshop on the Zapatista movement.
The Snail’s Pace Collective is a small group of student activists brought together as a result of their experiences in Chiapas, Mexico. They all participated in a study abroad program offered by the Mexico Solidarity Network, which is a 14-week, inter-disciplinary program focusing on the context, strategy, and tactics of Mexican social movements. As part of the program, the students attended an indigenous university for one month and participated in a Spanish language program in Zapatista territory for the reminder period of time. The life-changing experience in Chiapas is what prompted these students to share lessons learned with their immediate and larger communities. |

Racism, Classism, and the BU BioLab |

 Over 30 members of BU student community and Boston area turned out for a panel discussion of the BU Bio lab on Tuesday night. The joint Federal and University funded level 4 Lab is on track to be built in the South End starting this spring so that viruses and lethal bacteria such as Ebola, anthrax, hemorrhagic fever and other “unknowns” can be researched in sometimes classified experiments. The incalcuable risks, enormous costs and unanswer community concerns has citizens and activist groups vowing to shut the City promoted project down. |

 Howard Zinn speaks at Tufts University on his romantic view of war as a child, his participation in the war machinery during World War II as a bomber, and his change of ideology and present stand against all wars.
