Anti-Biolab Protesters Visit BU President Brown’s Home for a Second Time |

Roughly 30 concerned citizens chanted slogans and wielded signs and banners in front of BU President Robert Brown’s house late Monday night, for the second time in one week, to protest BU’s proposed Biolab in the Roxbury / South End area which could break ground as early as this month. Activism against the Biolab, which will likely be performing illegal research on deadly pathogens such as tularemia and Ebola, has been on the rise since it recently gained Federal approval to be built against the community’s wishes. |

Protesters gathered at Marsh Plaza in front of a Martin Luther King, Jr. statue at 10:00pm where several Boston and Brookline police cars were waiting for them. After reconvening in BU’s student center, the protesters split into groups to make their way to Brown’s residence, while undercover police monitored them.
When they arrived on the block of Brown’s house, Brookline Police Captain Tom Keaveney approached them and informed them of Brookline laws about focused picketing. Protestors decided to demonstrate in front of Brown’s house anyway until they were asked to leave. “While we didn’t want to get arrested for this action, we decided to go ahead and do it because we wanted Robert Brown to know that we’ll do whatever it takes to make sure this Biolab doesn’t get built,” said Dylan Bergman, one of the protesters.
The BU Biolab, which will include a Bio-Safety Level 4 (BSL-4) research facility, is being partially funded with a $1.6 billion grant from the Department of Homeland Security. In 1994, the Boston Public Health Commission adopted regulations banning the use of recombinant DNA techniques on BSL-4 pathogens, such as anthrax or plague, the kind that will be studied at BU’s proposed Biolab. If this BSL-4 lab does genetic research on BSL-4 organisms, which it most likely will, it will be breaking Boston law. Daniel Goodenough and David Ozonoff’s February 10 editorial in The Boston Globe states that the recombinant DNA ban “draws no distinctions between legitimate and illegitimate research. It makes no judgments on the value of recombinant DNA research in BSL-4 labs. It simply outlaws such research within the city's limits in order to protect public health and safety in a densely populated urban area.”
“When terrorists attacked America with anthrax, the strain was most likely developed here in the United States,” said Derek Garcia, a Brookline resident. “I am out here to stop terrorism by fighting it at its source: shutting down this bioterrorism lab.”
Last Wednesday, a dozen activists working with the nonviolent direct action anti-war campaign Operation: Over distributed fliers to all of Brown’s neighbors informing them that “Boston University President and environmental racist Robert Brown lives in [their] neighborhood!” before demonstrating outside of his $4.5 million house.
This demonstration was one in a series of direct actions that Operation: Over plans to carry out this spring. |

the biolab will be creating biological weapons for the federal government. most of what they're doing will be "biodefense" research, according to BU and the feds. basically that means they'll be making biological weapons that no one's made before so that on the offchance that terrorists end up making them as well, we'll know how they work. or so we can use them in war. whichever. we're not allowed to know what goes on. but the biolab WILL be researching and creating new biological weapons. otherwise they wouldn't need the BSL-4 part for this "biodefense" lab. |

This is a completely false statement.
The lab will NOT be creating biological weapons for the federal government. Period.
The lab WILL be doing research that has the potential to be weaponized. It could also lead to cures for infectious diseases and defenses against biological attacks.
Incidentally, a NIH-run BSL-4 lab may have just found an Ebola vaccine:

So what would you categorize anathrax as? What's the difference between it being created as a weapon or for the potential of it being "weaponized"? If the intention of some of the research is for weapons use, then it really doesn't matter.

Wrong motherfucker. No one is against a lab being built to test for diseases. But IT SHOULDN'T BE BUILT IN A MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREA AND IN A LOW-INCOME, PREDOMINATELY PEOPLE OF COLOR NEIGHBORHOOD! If those diseases get out, they could rapidly spread -being in a major metropolitan area- killing a lot of people which -according to its racist and classist location- would most directly threaten low-income people of color surrounding the labratory. |

A.G. Alito spoke about arresting reporters that speak up. It doesn't matter if what they say is the truth or a lie, he believes if the government doesn't like what you have to say, you should be thrown into jail.
Add to this, it seems that alot of those in power now, would like to have the ability to throw anyone they want into jail, without giving them access to a lawyer, without charging them with anything, American citizens included and never having to have a time frame on how long those arrestes are to be held in jail.
Free speech?
Protestors need to watch their backs. We are supposedly fighting for freedom all over the world, while back at home, those on power do whatever the heck they want.
