Police Attack May Day Demonstration with Tear Gas and Rubber Bullets |

LOS ANGELES, May 1, 2007 – An otherwise peaceful day of demonstrations throughout the city ended violently when the LAPD attacked the May Day march and rally in MacArthur Park today. A large rally numbering in the tens of 1,000s was driven from the park and the streets around the park. Families with young children were forced to flee as the police fired hundreds of rounds of rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowd. There are reports of many injuries, including journalists with a TV news crew. Some who have been hospitalized from their injuries. Witnesses report beatings with batons and many injuries from rubber bullets. The first incident of police violence occurred at Wilshire & Parkview when police drove a row of motorcycles head on into the march. A brief scuffle broke out but the situation was diffused. It was the incident at 7th and Alvarado that sparked the police attack, which resulted in the complete clearing of the park and scattered street fights with police in the neighboring area... |

Political conjunctions and Blurring definitions |

A number of factors have recently formed a conjunction, which provided a new view of a popular 'reality'. Whenever the flames of the terrorist 'threat' begin to wane convenient arrests are made that fan the embers back into flames of concern. Recent police raids in Sydney and Melbourne have resulted in the arrests of two Sri Lankan Tamils; "two men have appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on terrorism related charges," ran the intro from one media outlet while another ran with, "men face terrorism charges after raids." I’m sure we all get the drift but it should be noted that assistant commissioner to the Federal Police, Frank Prendergast, went to lengths "to make it clear that these men weren't involved in any possible attacks on Australian soil." Well then, what? |

NDIO, Calif- Thousands of sunburnt fans roared in unison and pumped their fists in the desert air Sunday night as reunited political rockers Rage Against the Machine took the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Grinning, lead singer-rapper Zack de la Rocha pumped his fist along with them.
Seven years after the quartet broke up following de la Rocha's departure, the band returned with a vengeance to close out the three-day festival east of Palm Springs.
Stomping, shouting into his microphone, grabbing his curly hair and inciting the audience to "keep fighting," de la Rocha powered through songs ranging from the bass heavy "Bulls on Parade" to the anthem "Killing in the Name."
He also railed against the war in Iraq and likened Bush administration officials to Nazi war criminals.
"This current administration is no exception. They should be tried and hung and shot," he said. |

Students Re-occupy Radio Universidad In Oaxaca City Today |

At approximately 5pm today in Oaxaca City, Radio Universidad was re-occupied by APPO sympathizers and students from different departments of the Benito Juarez Autonomous University who are sympathetic to the
APPO. With protests songs and political information, the transmissions were
initiated to spread information about the different mobilizations planned for the first days of May. Tomorrow, a national labor holiday, teachers
from section 22 union, together with other social organizations will march to the Zocalo of the Capital City to protest the continuing governance
of Ulises Ruiz, ousted by popular demand since June of last year.
The radio hosts are asking for support from students and the general
public to reinforce the radio installations and take security measures
in
case of state repression.
The radio hosts are saying that the radio and the university will be
occupied for the next two days.
The university radio is the site of the November 2nd battle between
APPO
sympathizers and Federal Preventive Police during an attempted eviction
of
the barricades protecting the occupied radio. The barricadistas and
radio
supporters were able to force thousands of Federal Preventive Police to
retreat and continued to defend the occupied radio and it's surrounding
barricades for nearly a month despite severe paramilitary repression.
The radio was handed over to the university authorities a few days
after
the violent battle between APPO sympathizers and Federal Preventive
Police
on November 25th. Due to the siege of Oaxaca City by state, local, and
federal forces and continuing repression, those upholding the
university
radio and the barricades felt that it was impossible to remain under
the
circumstances.
Although there were several radio takeovers by APPO sympathizers last
fall, Radio Universidad had been the last remaining after violent
evictions by Federal Preventive Police.
Today is the first day a radio has been occupied in Oaxaca City since
November.

We are concerned whether or not politics may have played a role in a case brought by Stephen Biskupic, the United States Attorney based in Milwaukee, against Georgia Thompson, formerly an official in the administration of Wisconsin’s Democratic governor. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals was reportedly so troubled by the insufficiency of the evidence against Ms. Thompson that it made the unusual decision to issue an order reversing Ms. Thompson’s conviction and releasing her from custody immediately after oral arguments in her appeal. |

Lawmakers Pass $8.3 Billion Plan to Increase Prison Capacity |

Los Angeles - In a move to ease chronic overcrowding, California lawmakers on Thursday approved the largest single prison construction program in the nation's history and agreed to send 8,000 convicts to other states.
The plan, which would cost $8.3 billion and add 53,000 beds, has the strong backing of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, who is eager to avert a federal takeover of the state's prison system, one of the most dysfunctional in the nation.
California prisons are so overcrowded - 16,000 inmates are assigned cots in hallways and gyms - that the governor recently took the highly unusual step of declaring a state of emergency in the system. The state's prisons house 173,000 inmates - far ahead of Texas, which has the next largest state prison system with 152,500 inmates - and has an $8 billion budget... |
