Workers’ unity, struggle puts brakes on firing of School Bus Union 5 |

Boston, Oct. 23 — In an impressive display of strength and unity in the face of a state attack against a militant union, hundreds of Boston bus drivers, bus monitors and community supporters came out tonight in support of the School Bus Union 5: Andre Francois, Steven Gillis, Stevan Kirschbaum, Richard Lynch and Garry Murchison. Today’s events put the Veolia transnational corporation on the defensive, thwarting its hell-bent plan to break the union by attempting to unlawfully fire these long-time, respected members of Steelworkers Local 8751, the Boston School Bus Drivers Union. |

Open Letter to the Anti-Tar Sands Movement |

Dear Movement,
We think it’s time for us to have a conversation: a conversation that can help us address the work we need to do in order to build the true grassroots power than can dismantle the oppressive system that tar sands companies and people in power have worked so hard to profit from. For the past four years we’ve heard “leaders” like Bill McKibben call on us to take action to stop the Keystone XL pipeline, and we’ve responded, dutifully travelling to DC to march and protest as a group. We’ve also watched as decision makers have continuously stalled and appeased this movement by refusing to approve the full pipeline, while still consenting to the production, transportation, and refinement of this toxic substance in more and more places across the continent. It is time for us to do more than submit public comments to a system incentivized to ignore us, or chain ourselves to symbols that will look good for the media. The Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands is writing this open letter to call for a dialogue and action around developing an anti-tar sands movement that focuses on the root causes of this issue and unites communities and groups in a common goal to stop tar sands in its entirety. |

Fast Food Workers Win a Union…through Zoolidarity |

Union members have watched in awe as fast food workers struck over the last year, calling for “$15 and a union.” Despite the slogan, however, the prevailing wisdom has been that union recognition isn’t really the goal; that’s too hard against giant employers insulated by a layer of franchises, with a part-time and transient workforce. |

Boston Bus Drivers on Wildcat Strike |

 The Boston School Department announced today that bus drivers are conducting an "illegal" work stoppage. It remains unclear how many drivers are participating in the strike, but the number appears to be substantial.
The bus drivers, members of United Steelworkers of America local 8751, list multiple grievances on their Facebook page, including short paychecks, forced off-the-clock work, harassment by school officials, violation of the terms of the union's contract, and more. Since September the bus drivers have been employed by Veolia Transportation, who took over the contract from 1st Student. |
