MLK PROTEST: MLK Day Living Wage Rally |

At 2:00 on Martin Luther King Day (01/21/02) about 400 Harvard University janitors and their supporters from the community packed the First Unitarian Church for a noisy, celebratory rally in support of a living wage. Afterwards, 250 people spilled out of the church into the cold drizzle for a vibrant, upbeat march around Harvard Square.

FIRST NIGHT IN BOSTON: Peace Vigils at First Night |

Two peace vigils were held during this year’s First Night activities in Boston. About a dozen people gathered in Copley Square from 4:00-5:00 to protest the on-going war in Afghanistan and the “war on terrorism”. From 5:00-6:00 about fifty people gathered at Park St. Station to protest the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

MACY'S PROTEST: Burma Action Movement Protests Outside Macy's |

Members of the Burma Action Movement at Brandeis University held a two-hour protest outside of Macy’s Department Store. The group, chanting slogans such as “Get your slave goods at Macy’s” drew attention to Macy’s sale of clothing made in Myanmar, a country known for its military dictatorship and use of forced labor.

LANDMINES: US Landmine Policy |

Anti-personnel landmines kill or maim 18,000 people a year. In Afghanistan, a heavily mined country, as many as 88 people a month have stepped on a mine. Since the start of the US bombing campaign, that number is thought to be much higher. A landmine is a horrific weapon that maims and kills indiscriminately, a weapon that most of the world's countries have seen fit to ban in a 1997 treaty. The United States remains one of the few that has not signed it. President Clinton put off signing the treaty to 2006, and the Bush Administration appears to be backing away from Clinton's promises altogether. The Defense Department has stressed the need for landmine use in areas where special forces are in operation, perhaps making mines an important part of the US "war on terrorism."
The following interview with Gina Coplon-Newfield, the Physicians for Human Rights-based coordinator of the US Campaign to Ban Landmines, describes mines and their implications for human rights, US policy towards mine-banning efforts, past and present, and ongoing efforts to get the US to join the mine-ban treaty.

VIGIL FOR PALESTINE: 11/29 Vigil For the Palestinian People |

On 11/29/01 at Park St. in Boston about forty people held a vigil in solidarity with the people of Palestine, who continue to suffer under Israel’s occupation of their lands. The occasion was the the anniversary of the 1947 passage of UN Resolution 181, calling for the establishment of both an Israeli and a Palestinian state.
