Concerned citizens "die" at BU biolab site |

A crowd of people gathered outside the site of BU's proposed biolab late Tuesday afternoon and fell down "dead," faces streaked with fake blood. "We wanted to show the public what an outbreak might look like," said Derek Garcia, a Boston-area resident. The street theater, which was staged by anti-biolab protestors, was intended to draw attention to the dangers of placing a Biosafety Level 4 (BSL4) facility in the middle of a densely-populated urban area. Participants included members of the direct action campaign Operation: Over, people from the Coalition to Stop the Bioterrorism Lab, and members of the Green-Rainbow Party. |
|
BU plans to build the biolab in the South End / Roxbury area, the poorest community in Boston. The lab, which is funded with Homeland Security money, will conduct "biodefense" research for the US military. It will do research on the deadliest incurable airborne pathogens in the world, such as Anthrax, Ebola, and Plague. Despite widespread opposition over the last three years, there will be no community oversight or accountability.
Critics of the lab point to BU's bad safety record. Three BU researchers were recently infected with tularemia in a BSL3 lab, and BU has received over 80 environmental violations in a span of just three years. "The evacuation plan is laughable. If there's any sort of accident in this lab, it will lead to another Katrina," said Maura Jacob, a junior at BU who has been active in the biolab campaign for three years.
On Wednesday and Thursday of last week, Operation: Over activists staged similar die-ins on BU’s campus, handing out over 1,000 fliers to passersby, including students changing classes and prospective BU students taking tours. During the die-in, a professor invited two of the activists to speak to her class about the biolab. "I was encouraged by how receptive the students were. I think the students learned a lot about this controversial issue that the BU administration is trying to squelch," said Dylan Bergman, an active member of Operation: Over.
This action was part of Operation: Over, a nonviolent direct action campaign against militarism in Boston. Operation: Over plans to stage regular die-ins on BU's campus. All are welcome to participate. |

It was fun dying with you guys. Keep up the great work.
The Grace Ross for governor and Wendy VanHorne for lt governor campaign has recently been brainstorming some rather elaborate biolab-related actions too. I think someone has already mentioned it to Klare. We'll definitely have to get in touch with you about it.
Thanks again for this awesome action. |

Postings about this lab keep mentioning "Concerned Citizens" are immigrants and visitors from other countries excluded from these demonstrations? Are "citizens" the only ones in danger, or are they the only people you think about? |
