Four years after the huge living wage campaign at Harvard University, janitors are still demanding better jobs. They face a contract re-negotiation in November, and they demand higher pay, more sick days, and equal treatment with outsourced workers, among other things.
On Saturday, September 17th, cleaning staff at Harvard marched through Harvard Yard, making noise and shouting for fair wages, better benefits, and other demands. The largely Latin American group of janitors will re-negotiate their contract this November with the university. This audio piece includes interviews with several janitors.
just wanted to note that there were also security officers present at this rally. security officers at harvard and throughout boston and cambridge, are trying to form a union.

If they are demanding better jobs, then they should go out in the workplace and find better jobs. There are some strings attached though, I will admit.
1. They will need to learn to speak English
2. They will need to prove that they are here legally
3. Maybe and just maybe (being that they work at Harvard) they will have to prove that they are not felons...see number 2 above.
Eliminate outsourcing, from outside contractors.
Ask Harvard this question. Why spend more money for outside contractors? When you could spend half for hired employees of Havard? (A company can save money by hiring employees to do the exact job, contractors were hired to do.)
If Harvard is worried about tax breaks? They can get grants for hiring people. And tax breaks from the state.
I'm sure Harvard knows about this.
