Management Turnover Impacting Quality of Care |
WILBRAHAM ˇV The most recent Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) survey conducted at the Wingate at Wilbraham nursing home found numerous deficiencies in the quality of care. The deficiencies point to a continuing pattern of management incompetence at the home.
Investigators found that management at the home has failed to:
„h Report allegations of resident abuse,
„h Conduct proper assessments of the medical status of residents,
„h Provide care in accordance with the care plans of residents,
„h Notify the attending physician of medication side effects,
„h Maintain clinical records in accordance with accepted professional standards.
The DPH survey was conducted in August and the deficiency report was first issued in September.
Previous DPH surveys have repeatedly found serious deficiencies related to quality of care at the home. Officials at DPH have already placed Wingate on a ˇ§special focusˇ¨ list because of its poor track record.
Schuster canˇ¦t keep good managers
Since workers at Wingate organized a union, the home has seen no less than five administrators and seven directors of nursing. Workers believe that the ownerˇ¦s inability to hire and retain an administrator and director of nursing is having a serious impact on the nursing home.
ˇ§We organized our union because we wanted to improve staffing and the quality of care. With constant changes in management, itˇ¦s pretty clear the Schustersˇ¦ canˇ¦t manage this facility. DPH needs to do something!ˇ¨ said Jill Arooth a CNA at Wingate for 9 years.
Under one Wingate administrator, Ed Forfa, three directors of nursing quit in just six months. The most recent director of nursing, Amy Mayott, was forced to resign after DPH found she failed to report serious allegations of resident abuse. Nevertheless, Mayott is still working at the Meadowood Nursing Home in South Hadley, a home owned by Gerald Schusterˇ¦s son Scott Schuster.
